"Audience brokerage and the reshaping of expertise: US Puppeteers move from stage to screen"
Using ethnographic data, I explore how US puppeteers' expertise changes as puppeteers shift from performing in direct interaction with their final audience (e.g.in live theater) to performing for their audience via an organizational structure (e.g. for a film or TV production). Specifically, I explore the challenges they meet and overcome when producing expertise in organizational settings that are unfamiliar with the nature of expert work. This study builds on and contributes to a growing scholarship that considers expertise as a relational process (e.g Eyal, 2013).
