"Research Entrepreneurialism and Gender Inequality in Academia"
The concurrence of institutional pressures for academic prestige and field segregation by gender provides a condition for gender stereotyping of academic fields, a potential source of gender inequality in the academic labor market. In this research, I discuss some early findings concerning the relationship between status competition among universities and gender inequality among academic faculty. I begin by sharing the observation that gender inequality has narrowed overtime within academic disciplines but not as much across disciplines. Synthesizing the theories of status construction and organizational competition, I then derive the hypothesis that gender inequalities in academic hiring and compensation have been driven by organizational efforts toward the accumulation of research grants and endowment, the two financial pillars of academic prestige. Relevant findings from the preliminary analyses of a combined dataset of research universities and their academic faculty are broadly in line with the hypotheses.
